THE Hybrid Athletics Abbotsford STORY

NATE BEVERIDGE - OWNER

Coach Nate was introduced to CrossFit in 2009 and began competing in the sport in 2010. While CrossFit proved to be an effective and challenging program to increase metabolic conditioning and strength, Nate saw room for improvement when it came to educating the athletes on the importance of proper warmups, mobility, muscle activations and pre-hab exercises as both injury prevention and to improve motor patterns. Nate saw a unique opportunity to open a CrossFit gym where he could combine his expertise as a kinesiologist with his passion and experience as a CrossFit athlete.
In 2011 Nate and his wife, Julie moved their young family to Langley where they began renovations on their new gym. In November 2011, Hybrid Athletics was born and introduced CrossFit to the Fraser Valley. Hybrid Athletics quickly developed a reputation as a dominant CrossFit gym. For three consecutive years (2012-2014) Hybrid sent 6 athletes to the CrossFit Games. In 2017 Nate competed in the Crossfit Games as an individual athlete (Master’s Division) where he placed 10th in the world. While still being home to some incredible CrossFit athletes, over time Hybrid has shifted our focus and passion to being a premier coaching facility where people receive support and guidance in creating healthy, active lifestyles which allow them to thrive in their lives. Hybrid prides itself on our strong sense of community, the effectiveness of our coaching and the level of care and passion our staff bring to our clients. In 2018 Hybrid began offering coaching services in the Abbotsford East community and in December 2020, we officially opened a second location. This has allowed us to bring our high quality coaching to a greater community, furthering our vision of helping people improve their lives through health and fitness.

OWNER/HEAD COACH

1. Describe your athletic background
I played every sport as a kid/teenager, but eventually pursued football as my primary sport. I parlayed a successful University career at UBC into a CFL contract with the BC Lions.

2. What brought you to CrossFit
I was looking for a way to fill the void left from not playing competitive sports anymore. And I liked the challenge of learning new skills and developing my overall fitness. Basically I wasn’t very good at it and I hated that. I wanted to get better at it.

3. What advice do you have for people interested in starting at Hybrid
Give yourself a chance. You deserve to enjoy your life to the fullest. If you trust the coaches and the community at Hybrid, you will start to see how amazing the community is to be a part of, and the health and fitness results you are searching for will happen through that process.

4. What inspires you to keep training and becoming better every day
I hold myself to a very high standard and I want to do everything to the best of my ability. That means putting my best effort into every action I take. Seeing the members at Hybrid put so much effort into their fitness, inspires me to always give my best as well.

5. What is your favourite thing about coaching?
I love to see PRs in the gym and people doing things they never thought they could do. But what really fires me up is hearing about how that new found fitness positively affected one of my clients in their everyday life.

6. When you’re not at the gym, we’ll find you__________?
Who are we kidding about not being at the gym… But every free minute I have is spent with my kids and wife Julie. They are my whole world.

7. What is your favourite thing about Hybrid?
The community. It is such a family feeling. Everyone buys into the ownership of the values and mission of Hybrid. To help people live their best life!

8. What is your coaching philosophy?
I am a bit of a chameleon here. I am very good at adjusting to each individual person to adapt my style slightly to best fit their needs, wants and goals. I believe hard work leads to success, so everyone I train is going to work hard!
